Please accept my sincere greetings on behalf of the Asociación Pro Derechos Humanos – APRODEH (Pro Human Rights Association), an organization that for 27 years has defended human rights in Peru.
APRODEH wishes to express its wholehearted support for Rights & Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development), an autonomous Canadian organization that, for more than 25 years, has been devoted to promoting the defence of human rights and democracy, as defined by the International Declaration of Human Rights, in many countries and before several regional and multilateral bodies.
Rights & Democracy, in its defence and promotion of human rights, has worked to build awareness and capacity in its partner organizations so that they can undertake activities aimed at strengthening democracy, citizenship, equity and inclusion.
APRODEH has witnessed and appreciated the contributions made by Rights & Democracy toward strengthening democracy in numerous countries, including Peru, acting as a link between governments and non-governmental organizations, and thereby promoting dialogue between the State and civil society.
Of particular importance to Peruvians were the interest and support displayed by Rights & Democracy as our country recovered its democracy during the 1990s. The same can be said of the collaboration that Rights & Democracy provided in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which shed light on the acts of violence committed between 1980 and 2000 during the county's internal armed conflict. Another issue that attracted the attention of Rights & Democracy was that of Tambogrande, where problems involving the mining industry and the environment were a source of conflict.
